NEWBIES GO CAMPING

A wood stove can turn a cold night in a hot tent into a warm and comfortable camp. But if smoke starts flowing back into your shelter instead of going up the chimney, something isn't right. Smoke inside a hot tent is more than an inconvenience. It can make the shelter uncomfortable and may indicate poor airflow, an inefficient fire, or an issue with the chimney system. Here are seven common reasons your tent stove may be smoking—and what you can do about them. 1. Your Firewood Is Too Wet Wet or freshly cut wood produces more smoke and burns less efficiently. For a cleaner-burning tent stove, use dry, seasoned firewood whenever possible. Smaller pieces are also useful when starting a fire because they heat the stove and chimney more quickly.Avoid relying on damp wood simply because it is available at the campsite. 2. The Chimney Isn't Drafting Properly A wood stove depends on chimney draft to pull smoke away from the firebox and out of the tent. A chimney that is too short, poorly positioned, heavily obstructed, or exposed to unfavorable wind conditions may not create enough draft. Check that: The chimney is properly assembled. There are no blockages or excessive bends. The chimney extends sufficiently above the shelter. The pipe is securely connected to the stove and stove jack. A clean, properly configured chimney is one of the most important parts of a hot tent stove setup. 3. The Chimney Is Still Cold When you first light a stove, the chimney may be filled with cold air. This can temporarily work against the upward draft and cause smoke to enter the tent.Start with a small, hot fire using dry kindling. Once the chimney warms up, the draft should improve and smoke should move more consistently upward. 4. The Stove Isn't Getting Enough Air A fire needs oxygen. If the stove's airflow is restricted too much, the fire can smolder instead of burning efficiently. Smoldering wood produces more smoke and less useful heat.Once the fire is established, adjust the stove's airflow according to the stove manufacturer's instructions rather than completely choking off the air supply.Your tent should also have appropriate ventilation. Never seal a hot tent completely while a wood stove is burning. 5. Wind Is Affecting the Chimney Strong or changing winds can interfere with chimney draft, especially when the chimney is exposed above the shelter. If smoke suddenly starts coming back into the tent when the wind changes, check the chimney position and connections first. The surrounding terrain can also make a difference. Setting up in a location with some natural wind protection may help create a more stable environment for your shelter and stove. 6. The Chimney or Stove Needs Cleaning Soot and creosote buildup can restrict airflow through the chimney.Inspect the chimney regularly and clean it according to the stove manufacturer's recommendations. This is particularly important if you use resinous or poorly seasoned wood, which can contribute to buildup. Before every trip, check the stove, chimney sections, connections, and spark arrestor for damage or blockage. 7. Your Stove May Be Too Large for Your Tent A bigger stove isn't automatically a better stove. An oversized stove can produce excessive heat, consume more fuel, and make temperature control difficult. If you constantly have to restrict the fire to keep the tent comfortable, your stove may simply be too large for your shelter. The best setup matches the stove size to the tent size, weather conditions, and intended use. How to Stop a Tent Stove From Smoking If smoke is entering your hot tent, work through these checks: Use dry, seasoned firewood. Start with a small, hot fire. Make sure the chimney is warm and unobstructed. Check all chimney connections. Make sure the stove has adequate airflow. Inspect and clean the chimney regularly. Check whether wind is affecting the chimney draft. Confirm that the stove is appropriate for the size of your shelter. If the problem continues, stop using the stove until you can identify and correct the cause. Never ignore persistent smoke inside a shelter. A Better Hot Tent Stove Setup A reliable hot tent system isn't just about the stove itself. The stove, chimney, stove jack, shelter ventilation, fuel, and setup location all work together. For campers looking to extend their season into colder weather, choosing the right stove and matching it to the shelter can make a significant difference. Explore the OneTigris Hot Tent Stove Collection to find wood-burning stove options and accessories designed for hot tent camping. Safety reminder: Always follow the stove manufacturer's instructions and local fire regulations. Use a wood stove only in a shelter specifically designed and rated for stove use. Maintain adequate ventilation and use a carbon monoxide detector where appropriate. Never leave a burning stove unattended.

You wake up on a cold fall morning and find water droplets all over the inside of your tent.It didn't rain. Your tent is new. So... is it leaking?Probably not.In many cases, the moisture inside your tent is caused by condensation, not a waterproofing failure. This is especially common during fall camping, when cold nights, humidity, and temperature changes create the perfect conditions for condensation. The good news? You can usually reduce it without buying a new tent. Why Is My Tent Wet Inside? Tent condensation happens when warm, moist air inside your tent meets a cold surface. And you are one of the biggest sources of that moisture.Every person sleeping inside a tent releases moisture through breathing and perspiration throughout the night. Add wet clothing, damp gear, rain, or humid air, and moisture quickly builds up.When the temperature drops overnight, that moisture can condense on the colder tent fabric. That's why you might wake up to a wet tent even when it never rained.Fall camping makes this especially noticeable because temperatures can drop significantly after sunset. The simple explanation:Warm, humid air + cold tent fabric + not enough ventilation = condensation. Condensation or a Leaking Tent? Before you assume your tent is leaking, look at where the water is appearing. It's probably condensation if: Water droplets are spread across large areas of the fabric The inside of the rainfly is wet Moisture is worst in the early morning The night was cold or humid Several people were sleeping inside The tent was tightly closed with little ventilation It may be a leak if: Water comes from one specific location You see water around a seam There's a visible hole or damaged fabric The same spot gets wet repeatedly Water appears directly below a damaged area A useful rule: Condensation is usually widespread. Leaks are usually localized. This distinction comes up frequently in camping communities. Reddit campers often initially assume their tent has failed, only to find that poor ventilation and cold, humid conditions were the real cause. How to Stop Tent Condensation? You don't need to eliminate every drop of moisture. You just need to give that moisture somewhere to go. 1. Keep Your Tent Vents Open This is the most important thing you can do.It can feel strange to open vents on a cold fall night. But completely sealing your tent traps the humid air produced by your breathing.Use your tent's built-in vents and mesh panels whenever weather conditions allow. You don't necessarily need to leave the entire door open.Even a small opening can help create airflow.Cold + dry is usually more comfortable than warm + damp.Experienced campers regularly recommend ventilation as the first solution to condensation, even in cold weather. 2. Create Cross-Ventilation One opening is helpful. Two openings on different sides of the tent are better. If your tent allows it, open vents or doors on opposite sides to encourage air to move through the shelter. The goal is simple:Fresh air comes in → humid air goes out. 3. Choose a Better Campsite Your campsite can make condensation much better—or much worse. Avoid pitching your tent: In low-lying depressions Directly beside a lake or stream On very damp ground In areas with heavy morning dew Where there is almost no airflow Instead, look for a dry, slightly elevated location with some natural airflow. You don't want to camp in strong wind. But a little air movement can help prevent humid air from sitting around your tent all night. 4. Keep Wet Gear Outside Your Sleeping Area Your breath isn't the only source of moisture.Wet jackets, shoes, towels, rain gear, and other damp equipment all add moisture to the air.Whenever possible, keep wet gear in the vestibule or another sheltered area instead of inside your sleeping space. And don't cook inside a closed tent.Cooking produces moisture and can also create serious fire and carbon-monoxide hazards depending on the equipment and setup. 5. Don't Assume a More Waterproof Tent Will Fix Condensation This is one of the biggest misconceptions.Waterproofing and condensation are two different problems.A waterproof tent keeps rain out.Ventilation helps moisture inside the tent escape. So if you're experiencing condensation, buying a tent with a higher waterproof rating isn't necessarily the solution. You can have an extremely waterproof tent and still wake up to condensation if: The vents are closed The campsite is humid The temperature drops sharply Several people are sleeping inside Wet gear is inside the tent As campers often point out, waterproofing doesn't make a tent immune to condensation. Why Is Condensation Worse in Fall? Fall creates almost perfect conditions for condensation.During the day, the temperature may be comfortable. After sunset, it drops.Your body continues producing warm, humid air.The tent fabric becomes colder.Eventually, moisture in the air turns into water droplets on the colder surfaces. Fall camping isn't just about managing condensation. The right gear can also make a big difference when temperatures drop after sunset. Check out our guide to the best camping gear for chilly autumn nights. That's why condensation can be particularly noticeable: On clear, cold nights Early in the morning After rainy weather In humid areas When the tent is completely sealed So if your tent suddenly seems “wet” after switching from summer to fall camping, the tent may not be the problem. The conditions are different. What Should You Do If Your Tent Is Wet in the Morning? Don't pack everything away while it's soaking wet if you can avoid it. Before packing: Wipe away heavy condensation.A small microfiber towel works well. Open the tent completely.Let fresh air move through the shelter. Separate wet layers.Don't tightly pack a wet rainfly against a wet inner tent. Dry your sleeping bag if necessary.Moisture trapped in insulation can affect comfort and performance. Dry everything again when you get home.Never store your tent long-term while it's still damp. The Bottom Line If your tent gets wet inside during fall, don't immediately assume it's leaking.Condensation is often the real culprit. The most effective solutions are simple: Ventilate your tent. Keep wet gear outside. Choose a dry campsite. Properly tension the rainfly. Allow humid air to escape. And remember: A waterproof tent keeps rain out. It doesn't stop condensation from forming inside. If you regularly camp during cool fall nights, look for a shelter with good ventilation, practical airflow, and a well-designed inner-and-rainfly system. The right setup won't necessarily eliminate condensation completely—but it can make waking up to a damp sleeping bag a much less common part of your camping trip.
